Student guidance

Team25 26

A child who feels good about themselves also learns better. At Portus Meridiem, we do everything we can to provide each student with the guidance that suits them. We do this in the areas of learning, personal development, and social interaction. At Portus Meridiem, we pay attention to every student.

The learning objective coach

Each class has a mentor, also known as a learning goals coach, who is the first point of contact for students and parents. The mentors support students with learning how to study, doing homework, and interacting with each other. Some students require more guidance than the homeroom teacher can provide. In that case, we involve the school's support team.

The support team

The support team consists of a support coordinator and a school social worker. Depending on the needs, a remedial teacher, a special education supervisor, and a counselor may also be part of the team.

The support team works both to prevent problems and to solve problems that have arisen. Support is always initiated in collaboration with the student’s homeroom teacher. If necessary, external help can also be arranged through the support coordinator, for example from a psychologist.

Care Structure

It is important for the school to know what you are good at. The DIA test, which we always administer at the beginning of the year, helps us determine your level. If it turns out that you need extra help with language or math, we will support you with that. For example, Numo helps you practice math, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. We try to help you in different ways.

You may also have questions in other areas. The school social work team helps you if you have questions in the social or personal domain. In that team, there is the dyslexia coordinator who supports you with learning with your dyslexia, and an internal supervisor who helps you with emotion regulation, and we have

At Portus, our employees are the driving force behind everything we do. Every day, they are committed to making a difference for our students in Rotterdam and the surrounding area.

Curious what this looks like in practice?
Two colleagues from Portus Meridiem share their experiences about their roles, their motivation, and what makes working at Portus special for them.

Confidential advisor

The confidential advisor is the point of contact for staff, students, and parents who wish to discuss undesirable behavior in the workplace confidentially. An important task of the confidential advisor is to support and guide staff and students who report undesirable behavior within the organization.

Other important tasks of the confidential advisor include providing information about their role and advising on safety policies. In addition, the confidential advisor offers support during complaints procedures, according to the complaints policy of the school board (Portus-CVO).

Preparation for the future

At our school, the mentor teacher and the dean jointly provide career orientation and guidance (LOB). Career orientation and guidance is a continuous program throughout the years that students attend Portus Meridiem. Through various activities, they are prepared for their further educational career and future profession.

A selection of these activities: mentor lessons, company visits, information sessions, and school fairs.

From the start of the school year, students record reports of their activities in a digital portfolio. This allows them to look back and reflect on their own development throughout their school career. The ultimate goal is for them to make a responsible and appropriate choice for further studies.

Protocols

Anti-bullying protocol

We want students and staff to feel safe at Portus Meridiem. Safety is a basic requirement for growth and learning. To prevent bullying, Portus Meridiem has established an anti-bullying protocol. This outlines how we deal with (digital) bullying and which methods and activities we use to prevent bullying.

Social media

Social media give us an opportunity to show that we are proud of our school. Improper use can harm our students and staff. We have drawn up a protocol for the use of social media.
