Technasium

What is the Technasium?

Imagine that at school you don’t just learn from books, but also get to design, build, and investigate things yourself. That is exactly what you do at the Technasium!

At the Technasium, we offer the subject R&D (Research & Design), and you learn by doing. You work on real-life problems from real companies. For example: a company wants a new type of bridge designed, or a hospital wants to know how to separate waste more efficiently. You and your classmates then work together to come up with a smart solution.

At the Technasium, you learn to:

  • Work together in a team
  • Think creatively and come up with solutions
  • Present your ideas
  • Investigate how something works
  • Design using, for example, drawing programs or models

For the subject Research & Design (R&D), you don’t have to be super good at math or technology, as long as you are curious and like to try things out.

You will work on real challenges from companies like Feyenoord, KPN, the police, or the Port of Rotterdam. You investigate, design, build, and improve—just like in the business world. Sometimes it even feels like you’re already doing an internship at various cool companies. During the projects, you’ll discover where your talents lie. Maybe you already know what you want to do later and you can start practicing now. Or you might find out which direction suits you best.

Who is the Technasium for?

The Technasium is a learning track for students from year 3 onwards in havo and vwo. In years 1 and 2, you take orientation lessons to experience whether the subject O&O suits you. So if you are about to go to secondary school and you enjoy being creative and working on real-life assignments, then the Technasium might be something for you!

Technasium year 1 visiting KPN

In December 2025, all first-year students went out for the second Technasium assignment. They were guests at the KPN headquarters in Rotterdam, where the students attended various workshops about the Internet of Things (IoT). During these workshops, they were introduced to new technologies and applications that will play an increasingly important role in the future.

The excursion at KPN is a great follow-up to the first Technasium assignment, on which the students have worked with great dedication over the past few months in collaboration with the police. We are proud of the involvement, creativity, and perseverance that the students have shown during this process.
